Frequently Asked Questions

Here you will find answers to most commonly asked questions about Stillness Buddy.

Will Stillness Buddy interfere with my work?

Not at all! On the contrary, numerous scientific studies have shown that:

  • Regular, short breaks improve productivity and efficiency.
  • Frequent, scheduled breaks to stretch, breathe deeply, move around, etc., significantly reduce muscular discomfort and eye-strain.
  • Mindfulness enhances performance, reduces stress, and increases the ability to remain calm in difficult situations.

The pauses in Stillness Buddy have been designed to be very brief, so that they won't get in the way of what you are doing. You can of course, reduce the frequency and duration of the pauses, according to your preferences.

And if you are really, really busy and you can't stop when a pause comes up, you can always cancel that particular break.

There are many people around me where I work. Will using Stillness Buddy make me stand out?

No. The exercises in Stillness Buddy have been designed in a way that they can be carried out very discreetly. You can do them in the middle of a busy office, without anybody noticing that you are taking a very important moment to re-connect with the stillness within you.

If they do notice, as a result of the peace and joy that you embody, then you may want to tell them about Stillness Buddy! :)

I have no previous experience of practising stillness. Will Stillness Buddy be suitable for me?

Absolutely! You don't need any previous experience to become more present to what is happening in the moment, both around you and within you. All you need is your willingness to bring your attention back into the now.

Will Stillness Buddy conflict with my religious or spiritual beliefs / practice?

There are many different modules of Stillness Buddy for you to choose from.

We offer several modules which are suitable for anybody, regardless of their spiritual or religious background. For example:

  • The "Original" module of Stillness Buddy contains a series of simple exercises that simply lead you to have the direct experience and practice of inner peace and stillness. The exercises do not include religious beliefs or references of any kind. They only point to what is self-evident, in your own experience.
  • We also have the "Relax" and "Stretch!" modules for people who want to use the program purely to feel more relaxed and physically better, without the spiritual side of things.

We have other modules for people with specific spiritual practices and beliefs.

Is there a video tutorial I can watch?

What are Moments of Stillness and why are they important?

These are short pauses which, by default, last 30 seconds and are displayed after every 30 minutes or so of working at the computer. You can of course, change the duration and frequency of these pauses.

During a Moment of Stillness, an exercise, practice or message or reflection will be displayed (depending on the module(s) you are using). The exercises and practices have all been designed so that they can be discreetly carried out, even in the midst of a busy office.

Even though a Moment of Stillness is very short in duration, it will really help you to be still inside, rest for a few moments and then continue working again after a few seconds. Moments of Stillness also help to prevent muscle fatigue.

What are Times for Presence and why are they important?

Times for Presence are longer pauses. By default, they are configured to last two minutes and to be displayed after every hour and 20 minutes or so of continuously working at the computer. You can of course, change how long and how frequently these pauses should be.

During a Time for Presence, an exercise, practice or message or reflection will be displayed (depending on the module(s) you are using). The exercises and practices have all been designed so that they can be discreetly carried out, even in the midst of a busy office.

Times for Presence are designed to be longer pauses, in order to help you become still at a much deeper level and be more grounded. They also give your body a chance to replenish itself. You will then be able to continue your work in a state of greater awareness and focus, and yet feeling relaxed.

How often will I get Moments of Stillness and Times for Presence?

You choose how frequently to have these breaks and pauses. By default, a moment of stillness lasts 30 seconds and occurs every 30 minutes or so, whereas a Time for Presence lasts 2 minutes, occurring every hour and twenty minutes or so, but you can change the frequency of these pauses in the control panel (PCs) / preferences window (Macs).

Do you have guidelines for the duration and frequency for the Moments of Stillness and Times for Presence?

We recommend that a moment of stillness lasts 20 to 30 seconds, after every 30 minutes and that Times for Presence last 2 to 3 minutes, after every hour or two.

Feel free to modify the settings to suit your preferences and reduce the frequency and duration of the pauses if you wish. Do bear in mind that you will see the best results if you have very short but regular pauses during the day.

Why do pauses sometimes appear after a period longer than I specified?

Stillness Buddy tracks your use of the keyboard and mouse. When the application detects that you have not used your keyboard and mouse for a while, it assumes that you may already be taking a break and the next pause is delayed accordingly.

When you are working very intensely and continuously without taking any breaks, the breaks will appear at a frequency closer to what you specified, which will help you to retain your presence and awareness of the moment.

If you want the breaks to appear at the exact frequency that you specified, regardless of how much or how little you are using your keyboard and mouse, simply un-tick the option "Display breaks only when actively using the computer" which you will find in the "General" tab, in the control panel (PCs) / preferences window (Macs).

How do I cancel a break if I need to?

You can cancel a Moment of Stillness or a Time for Presence, by clicking the round button (next to the timer bar) that you will see on the pause window. Alternatively press the Esc key.

Please note that you will not be able to cancel a break if you have chosen the option to enforce breaks. You can change this setting by ticking the option "Give me the option to cancel the breaks", in the Moments of Stillness and Times for Presence tabs, in the control panel (PCs) / preferences window (Macs).

I am unable to cancel a break. How do I change this?

This happens when you select the option to enforce breaks. This option is there in case you want to ensure that you do take the breaks when they come up. You can change this setting by ticking the option "Give me the option to cancel the breaks", in the Moments of Stillness and Times for Presence tabs, in the control panel (PCs) / preferences window (Macs).

Why does a red frame sometimes appear around the pause window?

When a pause window appears, you need to stop using your mouse and keyboard. If you move the mouse or type on the keyboard during this pause, the timer bar will go back to the beginning and the countdown is re-started. If you keep on moving the mouse or typing, a red frame around the window will appear, to remind you to stop.

Please note that a red frame appears only if you have selected the option to enforce breaks.

Can I pause Stillness Buddy for a while, if I need to?

How do I add my own exercises, practices and messages?

  • Depending on your choice, go to the Moments of Stillness or Times for Presence tab.
  • Click the customise button in the exercise area.
  • Select “Your own exercises” in the drop-down menu and click “Add New”
  • Enter your own exercise, practice or message and click "Save and close".

How do I edit existing exercises and messages?

You can edit or exclude existing exercises that you don't particularly relate to.

To edit an exercise, first click on the customise button in the exercise section. Highlight the exercise that you want to modify and click Edit. Change the text and click save.

Please note that this option is not available for some modules in Stillness Buddy. This is because some teachers or their organizations prefer that changes are not allowed, in order to preserve the integrity of their teachings.

To exclude an exercise from displaying, highlight it and click the exclude button.

Why can't I edit existing exercises in some modules of Stillness Buddy?

The option to edit existing exercises is not available in some modules of Stillness Buddy. This is because those teachers or their organizations prefer that changes are not allowed, in order to preserve the integrity of their teachings.

If there is an exercise or message that you don't particularly relate to, you can always exclude it from displaying, by highlighting it and clicking the exclude button in the customise exercises window.

How do I set up Stillness Buddy so that it asks me if I want to have a break, before it is displayed?

By default, Stillness Buddy displays the Moments of Stillness and Times for Presence automatically, as and when they are due. If you prefer to be asked whether a break should be displayed or not, go the General tab in the control panel (PCs) / preferences window (Macs) and select the option "Allow me to choose whether to display the break or not". Then, specify how long the notification window should appear.

When a break or pause is due, a small window will appear on your screen. You will then be able to choose whether to display the break (by clicking OK) or skip it (by clicking Skip or just ignoring the notification).

Can I have the exercises and content from more than one teacher? How I do this?

Absolutely! Stillness Buddy gives you the ability to have the teachings, practices and messages from the various spiritual teachers we have agreements with.

The teachings, practices and messages of each teacher have been grouped in what we refer to as a module. To add a module:

  • Go to the Modules tab in the control panel (PCs) / preferences window (Macs) Browse the available modules. By highlighting a module, a brief description of its contents will display on the bottom half of the tab Click "try" to start a 14-day free trial of a particular module Click "buy" if you would like to keep a module by buying a license.

You can add as many modules as you want. Our recommendation is to add only one at a time and try it for a few days, so that you can get a good feel for each module.

How do I manage the modules that I have on trial / have purchased?

For the modules that are on trial or that you have purchased: Tick the check-box on the left column for those modules that you would like to display. By un-ticking a check-box, the exercises and messages on that module will no longer be displayed (until you tick the check-box again).

In the Modules tab, you can also see licensing / trial information for each module, on the bottom half of the tab.

Do I need to try all the modules I am interested in during my initial 14-day trial?

No, once you have purchased a user license for at least one module, you will be able to keep using Stillness Buddy for as long as you want to. You can then start a free trial of other modules, as and when you want. You will have 14 days to try each one. If you want to keep a modules after its trial period, you will need to a buy a user license for that module.

Of course, you could always try as many modules as you like during your initial 14-day free trial. That's fine, but we recommend buying at least one module and then adding other modules gradually, so that you can really appreciate and enjoy what each one has to offer.

I like Stillness Buddy and want to keep using it after my initial trial. What do I need to do?

When I buy a user license, will I receive a registration key?

Yes. Shortly after your purchase has been completed, you will receive by email a serial number for the module that you just bought. Go to the modules tab in the control panel (PCs) / preferences window (Macs) and click the "buy" button of the module you have a serial number for. You will then be prompted to enter the serial number you've received and the module will be marked as licensed.

If you have bought several modules, you will need to repeat this process for each module. Each serial number will specific to the module you purchased it for, so please make sure that you enter the correct serial number for the relevant module.

Please keep a copy of your serial numbers in a safe place.

Do I need to download the program again once I have bought a user license?

No, the 14-day free trial version is exactly the same as the paid/licensed version.

Once you have purchased a user license, you will receive by email a serial number for the module that you just bought. Go to the modules tab in the control panel (PCs) / preferences window (Macs) and click the "buy" link of the module you have a serial number for. You will then be prompted to enter the serial number you've received and the module will be marked as licensed.

If you have bought several modules, you will need to repeat this process for each module. Each serial number will specific to the module you purchased it for, so please make sure that you enter the correct serial number for the relevant module.

Once I bought a user license for one module, is it possible to transfer the license to a different module?

Once you've purchased a user license for one module, it is not possible switch the license to a different module. The reason for this is because once a module is bought, the spiritual teacher who is the author of that module receives 30% of the price of a user license, and therefore modules can't be switched any more.

However, what you can do is add the module that you are interested onto your Stillness Buddy, which you can try for 14 days and then keep it by buying a user license for that module.

What happens if I get a new computer? How do I transfer my user license?

Not a problem. Simply contact us and we'll be happy to assist you. We'll manually amend your records on our server, so that you can install Stillness Buddy on a new computer, using the same license.

What if my computer breaks down and I need to re-install Stillness Buddy?

Please get in touch with us, using our contact form. We will need to manually amend your records on our server and provide you with instructions for you to re-install the application on your computer.

I cannot hear a sound when the breaks appear, even though I have enabled this option

Please check the overall volume level of your computer and that your speakers are not set to mute.

I installed Stillness Buddy but no breaks are being displayed. What should I do?

The most likely cause is that a firewall is blocking Stillness Buddy from connecting to the internet. The application is therefore not able to download the content of the module(s) you have selected, and hence you are not seeing any exercises displayed.

To solve this:

a) If you are using your computer at your place of work, your organization's firewall is probably blocking Stillness Buddy from connecting to the internet. If so, please speak with your IT department and see if they will allow Stillness Buddy to connect to the internet.

b) If your computer is not behind a corporate firewall (ie. you are using a personal firewall), you’ll need to add Stillness Buddy to the list of programs allowed to connect to the internet on your firewall.

You will find instructions for the most popular firewall programs on this page
